Angelokastro

Angelokastro is a Byzantine clifftop fortress perched on a sheer promontory at Corfu's northwest tip, commanding broad views over the Ionian Sea and the southern Adriatic. For centuries it served as the island's primary refuge: during Ottoman raids in the 16th century the entire population of Corfu sheltered within its walls, and the fortress was never captured — a feat owed less to its fortifications than to three sides dropping vertically into the sea, leaving only a single narrow path to the gate. Inside the sprawling ruins a small Byzantine chapel, cisterns, and rock-cut chambers have survived the centuries. The climb rewards visitors with sweeping views along Corfu's rugged northwest coastline, making it a particularly striking destination at sunset.
