Bayburt Kalesi

Bayburt Kalesi is a ruined hilltop fortress perched on a prominent rock above the northeastern Anatolian city of Bayburt, overlooking the upper Çoruh River valley. The castle's origins are traced to the Byzantine era, with subsequent expansions under Ottoman rule — though precise founding dates remain uncertain. Its position along an ancient trade and military corridor between Anatolia and the Caucasus made it a strategically contested stronghold for centuries. Much of the fortification wall has fallen into disrepair, but the surviving ruins command broad views across the valley and surrounding mountain ranges, making the castle the defining landmark of the modern city.
