Anboto is a 1,331 m limestone peak in the Basque province of Vizcaya, rising sharply above the Parque Natural de Urkiola near the industrial town of Eibar. The mountain holds a central place in Basque mythology as the dwelling of Mari, the most powerful deity in the pre-Christian Basque pantheon — a storm goddess said to inhabit the rocky caves near the summit and hurl lightning across the valleys. Hikers who tackle the steep ridge trail are rewarded at the top with sweeping views over the Basque hills, the Bay of Biscay coastline, and on clear days as far as the Pyrenees. The final approach involves exposed rock sections that demand sure-footedness and appropriate gear.
