Angermuseum

The Angermuseum is Erfurt's oldest municipal museum, inaugurated on 27 June 1886 inside a Baroque civic palazzo built between 1706 and 1711 by architect Maximilian von Welsch to serve as the city's public weighing house. Merchants passing through Erfurt were required to have goods weighed here for customs assessment — a reminder of the city's role as a major medieval trading hub. The collection spans paintings from the medieval period through the 20th century alongside sculptures, glasswork, prints, and historical musical instruments. Several original interior rooms survive, giving the building an atmospheric layering of Baroque architecture and civic history. The museum sits directly on the Anger, Erfurt's central square.
