Bach House

The Bachhaus Eisenach is the world's oldest museum dedicated to composer Johann Sebastian Bach, opened in 1907 by the Leipzig Neue Bachgesellschaft. Its core building is a half-timbered Fachwerkhaus some 550 years old — famously misidentified in the mid-19th century as Bach's actual birthplace, a case of mistaken identity that has since become part of the museum's own narrative. Across 600 square metres, around 250 original artefacts are on display, including a handwritten Bach manuscript, one of the rarest objects in the collection. Historic keyboard instruments — clavichord, harpsichord, lute-harpsichord — can be heard in live demonstrations, and regular chamber concerts connect the exhibits to living musical practice.
