Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom — literally 'Great City' — was the final and most enduring capital of the Khmer Empire, built on the orders of King Jayavarman VII from the late 12th century onward. The walled city covers roughly nine square kilometers, enclosed by sandstone ramparts up to eight meters high and pierced by five monumental gopura gates, each crowned with massive four-faced towers believed to represent the king's omniscient gaze across his realm. At its center, the Bayon temple rises with 54 towers bearing over 200 serene stone faces, while nearby the Elephant Terrace, Leper King Terrace, and jungle-swallowed Ta Prohm speak to the ambition of a civilization at its height. Visitors today typically explore by bicycle or tuk-tuk; dawn arrivals are rewarded with mist drifting over the moats and the towers glowing in early light.
