Banteay Kdei

Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist monastery complex in the Angkor archaeological park, constructed from the mid-12th to early 13th century under Khmer king Jayavarman VII. Its layout echoes the nearby Ta Prohm but on a smaller, less ornate scale — a quality that keeps crowds thinner and the atmosphere quieter. Poor original construction and brittle sandstone have left the complex in worse structural condition than most of its Angkor neighbors: galleries have collapsed, gopura towers lean at precarious angles, and tree roots push steadily through the stonework. For visitors who find Angkor Wat's footpaths overcrowded, Banteay Kdei offers a more contemplative encounter with the Khmer empire — shadowed, decaying, and largely unrestored.
