Bakong

Bakong, located in the Roluos Group southeast of Siem Reap, was consecrated in 881 under King Indravarman I and stands as the first monumental mountain temple ever built by a Khmer king on the plain — a foundational moment in Khmer architectural history. Dedicated to Shiva, the five-tiered sandstone pyramid rises from a rectangular moat symbolizing the cosmic ocean, establishing a spatial logic that would define temple design across the Khmer empire for centuries. The sanctuary at the pyramid's summit originally housed a royal linga, and stone guardians and naga balustrades still line the causeways. Far less visited than the Angkor complex to the north, Bakong rewards visitors with a quiet climb, modest crowds, and open views across the Cambodian plain — an atmosphere closer to archaeological discovery than tourist spectacle.
