Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral marks the spot where NASA astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perished on January 27, 1967, when a flash fire swept through the Apollo capsule during a routine ground test. The accident halted the entire Apollo program for 21 months and forced a fundamental redesign of the spacecraft's hatch and atmosphere systems — changes that many engineers credit with enabling the eventual Moon landings. The launch pad was decommissioned after the disaster and now stands largely intact as an open-air memorial, its concrete structure weathered but preserved, with a plaque bearing the crew's names.
