Topes de Collantes is a protected nature reserve set at around 800 metres elevation in Cuba's Sierra del Escambray, roughly 80 kilometres from Cienfuegos. Operated by the state tourism company Gaviota, the park protects a dense montane cloud forest rich in endemic plant and bird species, including the Cuban trogon, the country's national bird. A network of marked hiking trails leads through the highland landscape to waterfalls such as the Caburní Falls, which plunge into a natural swimming pool below. From the ridgelines of the Escambray mountains, broad panoramas open across the Cuban interior and toward the Caribbean coast.
