Astron

The Astron is the wreck of a steam tanker that ran aground off Bávaro beach near Punta Cana in April 1978 and has remained there ever since. Never salvaged, the vessel has been fully claimed by the sea: coral has colonized the hull and schools of fish circle the rusting frame, turning it into a thriving artificial reef. Divers and snorkelers can reach it easily from the beach — it rests in just a few meters of water, making it accessible even to beginners. As one of the few easily reachable wrecks in the Dominican Republic, the Astron has become one of the region's most photographed subjects.
