Atkinson Clock Tower

The Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower is the oldest surviving structure in Kota Kinabalu and a rare intact remnant of British colonial architecture in Sabah. It was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson, the town's first district officer, who died of malaria in 1902 at just 28 years old. For many years the tower also served as a navigational landmark for vessels entering the harbour. Perched on a small hill near the city centre, it stands in quiet contrast to the surrounding modern skyline — one of the few tangible links to pre-war Kota Kinabalu, as much of the city was destroyed during World War II bombing raids.
