Attavyros

Attavyros, at 1,215 metres, is the highest peak on the island of Rhodes, rising sharply above the wine-growing village of Embonas in the island's mid-west. In antiquity, a sanctuary of Zeus Atabyrios stood near the summit — ancient sources trace the cult site back to Phoenician settlement on the island, and scattered wall remains are still visible today. The hike follows rocky trails through low Mediterranean scrub, and just below the true summit a fenced perimeter surrounds a modern radome used for air-traffic surveillance, lending the otherwise wild peak an incongruous, slightly surreal atmosphere. On clear days the view extends to the Turkish coastline to the east and the island of Kos to the north.
