Augusta Raurica

Augusta Raurica is the best-preserved Roman colonial city north of the Alps, situated on the southern bank of the Rhine about ten kilometres east of Basel. Founded around 44 BC under Julius Caesar — predating Cologne and Augsburg — the colony grew to roughly 15,000 inhabitants by 200 AD, making it the largest city in the region. Its centrepiece is a reconstructed amphitheatre that once seated around 10,000 spectators, flanked by the forum and several temple precincts. Around 280 AD the civilian settlement was largely abandoned, and the late-Roman riverside fort Castrum Rauracense rose in its northern quarter, garrisoning troops for another century. The open-air site allows visitors to walk freely among reconstructed buildings and active excavation zones, while the onsite museum holds the largest surviving Roman silver treasure found north of the Alps.
