Aguntum

Aguntum is the ruined site of a Roman municipium located roughly four kilometres east of Lienz, near Dölsach in East Tyrol, Austria. Elevated to autonomous city status by Emperor Claudius in the 1st century AD as Municipium Claudium Aguntum, it was one of the most significant urban centres in the Roman province of Noricum. Excavations across 30,000 square metres have uncovered street grids, residential quarters, a bathhouse, and sections of the forum. A 5th-century early-Christian baptistery found on site attests to the settlement's continuity well into Late Antiquity. Visitors today can walk the open-air excavation area among preserved wall foundations, while an on-site museum contextualises everyday Roman life in this Alpine outpost through artefacts recovered from the digs.
