Augustiner Museum

The Augustiner Museum occupies the converted complex of a medieval Augustinian hermit monastery in central Freiburg, making the building itself as layered as the collection it houses. Opened in its present form in 1923, it ranks among the most important museums along the Upper Rhine, with holdings spanning medieval panel painting, Baroque sculpture, and 19th-century regional art. A distinctive feature is the close collaboration with the Archdiocese of Freiburg's diocesan collection, which has shared the building since the 1920s — meaning ecclesiastical and civic collecting traditions are displayed side by side. Several original stone sculptures from the Freiburg Minster were relocated here for conservation, replaced by replicas on the cathedral itself, giving visitors a rare chance to study the originals at eye level. The restored Gothic cloister of the former monastery provides a quietly striking frame for the permanent collection.
