Alter Friedhof
The Alter Friedhof in Freiburg's Neuburg district is one of Germany's oldest cemeteries still preserved in its entirety — a 2.65-hectare decommissioned burial ground with a park-like atmosphere and around 1,200 gravestones spanning several centuries. Classified as both a cultural and natural monument, it serves as a tangible record of local funerary customs and Freiburg's civic history. A dedicated support association (Förderverein) works to maintain and document roughly half the graves deemed worthy of preservation. Visitors walk among weathered epitaphs and old-growth trees in a quiet that feels unexpected this close to the city center — less a tourist attraction than a meditative open-air archive of the city's past.
