The Archäologisches Museum Colombischlössle (ArCo) occupies a turreted neogothic villa on Freiburg's Rotteckring boulevard, lending the collection a fittingly theatrical setting. The permanent exhibition spans roughly 300,000 years of human presence in the Upper Rhine region, moving from Palaeolithic stone tools through Celtic metalwork to Roman-era everyday objects found across the Breisgau. The contrast between the 19th-century historicist architecture and the prehistoric artifacts inside is part of the museum's distinctive character. It is open Tuesday through Sunday (Wednesday until 19:00) and charges an admission fee.
