Aurora Bridge

The George Washington Memorial Bridge — universally known as the Aurora Bridge — is an 889-meter steel cantilever truss bridge completed in 1932, spanning Lake Union between the Queen Anne and Fremont neighborhoods. Built as part of the Pacific Highway corridor, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. At roughly 50 meters above the water, the bridge is a functional artery for State Route 99 traffic and a visual anchor of the Lake Union skyline as seen from Fremont's shoreline paths. Its considerable height has also made it the subject of longstanding civic debates around suicide prevention, a context that is part of the bridge's public identity in Seattle.
