Back Bay Fens

Back Bay Fens — known locally simply as The Fens — is a sprawling urban wetland park in Boston's Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted as a key segment of his Emerald Necklace parkway system in the late 19th century. Olmsted transformed what had been a tidal saltmarsh into a naturalistic landscape of reed beds, ponds, and curving pathways — one of the earliest large-scale ecological park designs in the United States. The park's cultural footprint is considerable: both the surrounding Fenway–Kenmore district and Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, take their names from it. Today The Fens draws joggers, cyclists, and community gardeners, with its meandering paths and quiet pond edges offering a genuine escape from the surrounding urban density.
