Iwamizawa Station

Iwamizawa Station sits in the city of Iwamizawa in Hokkaido's Sorachi subprefecture, with roots stretching back to 1884 when the line was laid as part of the Meiji-era development of Japan's northern frontier island. The current station building, however, is a thoroughly contemporary structure completed in 2007 that earned the Brunel Award, a prestigious international prize for excellence in railway architecture and design. It functions as a regional interchange connecting Iwamizawa to Sapporo and onward routes into the Sorachi interior — making it of note to architecture enthusiasts as much as to transit passengers.
