Hakata Station

Hakata Station is the main railway hub of Fukuoka city and the primary Shinkansen terminus on the island of Kyūshū. First opened in 1889 during the Meiji era, the station has been rebuilt several times, with the current structure housing JR Hakata City — one of Japan's largest station-integrated shopping complexes, topped by a rooftop garden with city views. The basement food hall (depachika) draws locals and visitors alike with Fukuoka specialties, most famously the rich, tonkotsu-based Hakata ramen. Multiple subway and regional rail lines converge here, making it the practical heart of the entire northern Kyūshū region.
