Karuizawa Station

Karuizawa Station sits in the resort town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, on Japan's main island of Honshū, first opened in 1888 during the Meiji era. It holds a quiet distinction as the highest-elevation station on Japan's entire Shinkansen network, a fitting credential for a mountain resort that has served as a summer retreat for Tokyo's elite since the late 19th century. Today the station is served by Hokuriku Shinkansen trains running between Tokyo and Nagano, and functions as the main gateway to the area's hiking trails and ski slopes.
