Messina Marittima railway station

Messina Marittima is a harbour railway station in northeastern Sicily, opened in 1889 to serve as the ferry link between the Sicilian rail network and the Calabrian coast across the Strait of Messina. For decades, entire railway carriages were loaded onto traghetti — ferry boats — and transported to Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, making this station a critical hinge in Italian rail logistics. Today the station sees minimal traffic, and its late 19th-century building stands as a quiet remnant of Messina's former importance as a rail gateway between Sicily and the Italian peninsula.
