Uelzen railway station

Uelzen station is a junction railway station on the eastern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, with origins dating to 1847 and listed as a protected monument in Lower Saxony. Its distinctive appearance owes everything to Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who overhauled the building for the Expo 2000 world exhibition — clad in colourful ceramic tiles, irregular windows, gilded onion domes and planted roof terraces that are immediately recognisable as his work. For a small station serving a town of around 35,000 people, the ambition of the design is remarkable, and it draws architecture enthusiasts from across Germany. The building remains a fully operational junction, where the Hamburg–Hanover and Hanover–Bremen rail corridors intersect.
