Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo, is Sri Lanka's sole international scheduled-service airport and the main hub for SriLankan Airlines. Originally built as a British military airfield in 1944, it transitioned after independence into the island's primary gateway for international travel. The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, opened in 2013, provides a direct link to the capital.
