Basílica da Santíssima Trindade

The Basílica da Santíssima Trindade in the pilgrimage town of Fátima, Portugal, is claimed to be the fourth-largest Catholic church in the world and the largest newly built church of the 21st century. Designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis and consecrated in 2007, it was elevated to the rank of basilica minor in 2012, making it one of only eight international shrines worldwide. Its neo-Byzantine design with modernist sensibilities seats up to 9,000 worshippers beneath a single wide-span roof with no internal load-bearing columns — an engineering feat as much as a spiritual statement. Together with the older Rosary Basilica, it anchors the Sanctuary of Fátima, one of the most visited Marian pilgrimage sites on earth. The entire building is fully wheelchair-accessible, designed from the outset for the large and often elderly pilgrim groups that arrive throughout the year.
