Castle of Ourém

Ourém Castle sits atop a prominent hill above the town of Ourém in Portugal's Santarém district, and has been classified as a national monument since 1910. Its medieval walls display Romanesque structural features, a legacy of the site's strategic role during the Reconquista. Count Afonso, grandson of King João I, transformed the fortress into a palatial residence in the 15th century; his elaborate tomb survives in the nearby collegiate church. The hilltop position affords wide views across the Nabão river valley and the surrounding countryside. The ruins are freely accessible and can be explored independently.
