Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham

The Slipper Chapel in Barsham, Norfolk, is a 14th-century medieval chapel and England's national Roman Catholic shrine, dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Its name recalls the pilgrimage custom of removing one's shoes here to walk the final mile to Walsingham barefoot — a tradition that drew thousands across medieval England. After the Reformation the chapel fell into disuse and spent years as a barn before being repurchased by Catholics in 1897 and carefully restored. Elevated to the rank of Basilica minor in 1934, it remains a modest flint structure whose small scale belies its national significance. Annual national pilgrimages still converge here, making it one of the most active Catholic pilgrimage sites in Britain.
