Basilica of St. Fidelis

The Basilica of St. Fidelis, widely nicknamed the Cathedral of the Plains, is a Romanesque Revival Catholic parish church in Victoria, Kansas, consecrated in 1911. Its twin stone towers rise dramatically above the flat Great Plains landscape, visible for miles in every direction — a deliberate assertion of faith and permanence by the Volga German immigrant community that built it. Capuchin friars led the construction, drawing on the traditions of the settlers' ancestral villages along the Volga River in Russia. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of basilica minor. Visitors today find a soaring vaulted nave, vivid stained-glass windows, and a congregation still rooted in the church's founding community.
