Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville
The Basilica of St. Francis Xavier is a neogothic brick parish church in the small Iowa town of Dyersville, completed in 1888 during a period of intensive church construction by German immigrant communities across the Midwest. It is dedicated to the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier, one of the most venerated figures in the history of Catholic world mission. The Vatican granted it the rare title of basilica minor — an unusual distinction for a parish church in a town of this size — and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places together with its adjoining rectory. Inside, visitors find neogothic vaulting, stained-glass windows, and a soaring interior that feels distinctly outsized for the surrounding prairie landscape.
