St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and Library

Known locally as the 'Old Cathedral,' St. Francis Xavier Basilica is a Roman Catholic church in Vincennes, Indiana, built in 1826 in the Greek Revival style, with a colonnaded facade that still anchors the historic town center. It served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Vincennes from 1834 until 1878, when the bishop's seat was transferred to Indianapolis as Indiana's capital grew in prominence. Holding the title of Basilica minor — a papal distinction — it reverted to a parish church and now belongs to the Diocese of Evansville. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it stands as one of Indiana's oldest surviving churches and a tangible marker of early Catholic missionary activity along the Ohio River frontier.
