Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption (Lancaster, Ohio)
The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a neogothic Roman Catholic parish church in Lancaster, Ohio, completed in 1864 during the Civil War era. Its designation as a Basilica minor is a papal honor granted to relatively few churches, conferring specific liturgical privileges and marking the building's spiritual significance within the Diocese of Columbus. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Lancaster Historic District, the church stands as one of the more architecturally elaborate 19th-century religious buildings in central Ohio. Its pointed arches, slender towers, and decorative stonework reflect the Gothic Revival tradition that Catholic immigrant communities — predominantly Irish and German — transplanted from Europe to the American Midwest.
