Battle of Chippawa

This monument marks the site of the Battle of Chippawa on July 5, 1814, one of the most tactically decisive engagements of the War of 1812. American forces under General Jacob Brown defeated a British regular infantry force near the Niagara River — a rare clear-cut American field victory that was later cited as evidence the young republic could train professional soldiers to European standards. The gray uniform reportedly worn by American troops that day is said to have inspired the dress uniform adopted by West Point cadets. The site sits near present-day Niagara Falls and forms part of the broader Niagara Campaign heritage corridor along the Ontario shoreline.
