Beloe

Lake Beloye sits within the Meshchyera Lowlands of western Russia, a glacial alluvial plain of swampy terrain, gravelly moraines, and limestone bedrock. Its defining feature is an extraordinary depth of around 50 metres — a deep gouge carved by glacial action during the last ice age, making it a rare outlier among the region's otherwise shallow lakes. The lake was once linked to the neighbouring Lake Velikoye by an artificial canal, but that connection was filled in 2009. Pine forests ring the shore, with reeds and sedge dominating the shallows. The lake is well-used locally for fishing, swimming, and summer recreation, and its unusual depth draws occasional interest from divers.
