Bennerley Viaduct
Bennerley Viaduct is one of the last surviving wrought-iron trestle railway bridges in Britain, striding across the Erewash Valley on the Derbyshire–Nottinghamshire border. Built in 1877 for the Great Northern Railway, the line closed in 1968 and the structure spent decades slowly corroding while demolition proposals came and went. The volunteer-led Friends of Bennerley Viaduct spearheaded a restoration campaign from 2016, and since 2022 the bridge has been open as a public walking and cycling route. Its latticed wrought-iron framework — Grade II* listed — offers wide views across the East Midlands plain and stands as a rare intact example of Victorian railway engineering that most of Britain has long since scrapped.
