Beomeosa

Beomeosa is a Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order, situated on the forested northern slopes of Geumjeong Mountain on the outskirts of Busan. According to tradition it was founded in 678 CE during the Silla dynasty, after the monk Uisang reported that a golden fish descended from a heavenly pond — lending the temple its name, meaning 'Temple of the Heavenly Fish'. The complex was largely destroyed during the Imjin War (1592–1598) and rebuilt in its present form in the early 17th century under the Joseon dynasty. The surviving wooden pavilions, painted gate structures, and stone lanterns sit within a canopy of pine and maple, creating a contemplative atmosphere distinct from urban Busan below. Hiking trails connect the temple grounds to the Geumjeong ridge, and a temple stay program offers overnight retreats with meditation practice open to visitors.
