暘谷城（日出城）

Hiji Castle — also known as Yōkoku Castle (暘谷城) — sits in the town of Hiji in Ōita Prefecture, distinct from the nearby city of Beppu. During the Edo period (1603–1868) it served as the seat of the Kinoshita clan, a smaller Tozama daimyo house with a stipend of 30,000 koku, formally subordinate to the Tokugawa shogunate as an outside lord. Little of the original fortification survives today; the site retains the characteristic layout of an early modern Japanese castle compound.
