Aboyne Castle

Aboyne Castle is a medieval stronghold in Aberdeenshire, sitting 1.2 km north of the village of Aboyne on the River Dee. Its 13th-century site was chosen for strategic control over the northern end of one of the Mounth crossings — the key passes through the Grampian Mountains that shaped the military and trade routes of medieval Scotland. The castle fell into prolonged disrepair before the Marquess of Huntly had it restored in 1979. A Category B listed building, it stands within a landscaped park grounds that offer a quiet retreat against the rugged Aberdeenshire countryside.
