Bhadra Fort

Bhadra Fort is a medieval citadel at the heart of Ahmedabad's old city, commissioned in 1411 by Ahmad Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad and first sultan of the Gujarat Sultanate. Its royal pavilions, mosques, ornate gateways, and open courtyards exemplify Gujarat Sultanate architecture — a refined fusion of Indic and Islamic building traditions. The fort effectively gave the surrounding neighborhood and the Bhadra Bazaar their names. After centuries of neglect, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation undertook a major restoration from 2014 onward, during which excavations revealed medieval foundations that refined understanding of the fort's original layout. Visitors today can walk the ramparts for views across the old city's roofscape, while the bustling Bhadra Bazaar immediately below continues the site's centuries-old role as a commercial and civic anchor.
