Ägidienkirche (Erfurt)

The Ägidienkirche at the Wenigemarkt in Erfurt is a single-nave Gothic church that once served as the eastern bridge-head church framing the entrance to the famous Krämerbrücke. Its distinctive archway has marked the passage into the Krämerbrücke since the medieval period, making it one of the most recognizable urban anchors in Erfurt's old town. The church was originally one of a pair: the Benediktikirche stood at the western end of the bridge from the 11th century until its demolition in 1890, surviving today only in the name of the adjacent Benediktsplatz. Listed as a protected cultural monument in Thuringia, the Ägidienkirche is a quiet but structurally important remnant of a medieval urban design that deliberately bracketed its bridge with sacred architecture.
