Bab Mahrouk

Bab Mahrouk is an Almohad-era city gate tucked into the northwestern corner of the Fès medina, one of the oldest and least-visited entry points in the historic city wall. The Almohads, a Berber dynasty that dominated North Africa and al-Andalus between the 12th and 13th centuries, left behind a distinctive architectural language of austere geometric arches and robust masonry — still legible in the gate's structure today. As part of the Medina of Fès it has carried UNESCO World Heritage status since 1981, yet it draws only a fraction of the crowds that converge on the more photogenic Bab Bou Jeloud nearby. Visitors who seek it out find a quieter edge of the medina, largely free of souvenir stalls, offering an unmediated encounter with the original Almohad city fabric.
