The monument 'We and Our Mountains' — affectionately known as 'Tatik Papik' (Grandmother and Grandfather) — stands on a hill at the northern entrance of Stepanakert, carved from local limestone in 1967. It depicts two monumental heads of an elderly man and woman, widely read as a symbol of Armenian rootedness in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Soviet sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan created the work during the Brezhnev era, but it transcended its official commission to become a defining cultural emblem. During successive conflicts over Nagorno-Karabakh, the monument was repeatedly invoked as a symbol of Armenian identity and endurance. It remains a landmark at the city's entrance, overlooking Stepanakert's hillside terrain.
