Also known as: Independence Monument | Malta
The Independence Monument stands at the entrance to Maglio Gardens just outside Valletta's city gates, marking September 21, 1964 — the day Malta gained independence after decades of British colonial rule. The sculpture serves as a focal symbol of Maltese national identity, commemorating a transition that came in the wake of World War II, during which Malta endured one of the most intense aerial bombardments of the entire conflict. The surrounding area is well-maintained and lively, with the Kristu Re statue nearby and a cluster of cafés, shops, and the main bus terminus within walking distance, making it a natural gathering point at the threshold of the capital.
