Black Star Square

Black Star Square is Ghana's foremost ceremonial plaza in Accra, completed in 1961 under President Kwame Nkrumah just four years after the country's independence from British rule. At its center stands the Black Star Arch, a triumphal arch topped with a black star that has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Pan-African independence. Nkrumah deliberately designed the square as a stage for state occasions and military parades, a function it still serves today during Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. On ordinary days the vast open square is quiet, offering unobstructed views of the arch and surrounding government buildings; on national holidays it transforms into the ceremonial heart of the Ghanaian state.
