Açıksaray

Açıksaray — Turkish for 'open palace' — is a Byzantine complex of rock-cut monastery cells, chapels and living quarters carved into the soft tuff of the Cappadocian plateau, located roughly three kilometres southeast of Gülşehir. The site likely dates to between the 9th and 11th centuries, when Christian monastic communities colonised the region's distinctive volcanic rock formations. Remnants of frescoes and liturgical niches inside the cave churches offer a glimpse into Orthodox worship practice at the Byzantine provincial frontier. Set apart from the busier trail networks around Göreme, Açıksaray sees relatively few visitors and is accessible around the clock, preserving a quietude that more prominent Cappadocian sites have long since lost.
