Bolafjall

Bolafjall is a 638-metre mountain rising above Bolungarvík in Iceland's Westfjords, one of the most prominent peaks in this remote region. Its summit plateau hosts a radar station commissioned on 18 January 1992 by the Iceland Defense Force and NATO, now operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard — a functioning Cold War remnant quietly monitoring the North Atlantic. The only access road has a 10% gradient and is open just two months a year, in July and August, when snow and ice permit. On clear days the summit offers sweeping views across interconnected fjords, open sea, and the jagged coastline of the Westfjords, with a sense of isolation rarely matched in accessible Icelandic terrain.
