Bunker 42 -Tagansky Protected Command Point

Bunker GO-42 sits 65 metres below Moscow's Taganka district and was one of the Soviet leadership's key nuclear command bunkers, built in the early 1950s on Stalin's orders. Designed as a command centre for the Strategic Rocket Forces, the complex covered more than 7,000 square metres and was equipped to keep up to 600 people alive for months. After the Cold War it was decommissioned and reopened in 2006 as the Museum of the Cold War. Visitors descend 18 storeys of staircases, see reconstructed command rooms, mock-ups of R-7 missiles and can experience a simulated nuclear launch. The descent itself, cold and echoing, is somewhere between historic site and staged spectacle.
