Archéoforum

The Archéoforum is an underground archaeological museum opened in 2003 beneath Liège's central Place Saint-Lambert, on the site of the former Cathedral of Saint-Lambert. That cathedral, once the spiritual heart of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, was demolished during the French Revolution in 1795, leaving its remains buried beneath the modern city square for generations. Excavation campaigns dating back to 1907 revealed stratified layers spanning from Roman occupation through the medieval period. Visitors descend into the preserved dig site itself, walking among exposed foundations, mosaics, and artifacts displayed in situ — a rare format that turns the archaeology into a spatial, immersive experience rather than a conventional gallery visit.
