Campo de' Fiori

Campo de Fiori lies in the Rione Parione east of the Tiber and has hosted Rome's oldest daily market since 1869. Unlike most Roman squares it has never had a church, which still gives it an unusual atmosphere. At its centre stands Ettore Ferrari's brooding bronze monument to Giordano Bruno, honouring the Dominican philosopher on the exact spot where the Roman Inquisition burned him as a heretic on 17 February 1600. In the morning the stalls offer Ariccia lettuce, carciofi and dried porcini. Once the market is packed away the trattorias and aperitivo bars around the square fill up, turning the Campo into one of the liveliest gathering points in the city centre.
